WYATT

The look of utter shock on Gina’s face was almost enough to quell the firestorm of emotions in my gut.

Almost.

I quickly squeezed myself behind a potted tree as her family and friends stampeded the entrance to reel her into the party. Gina’s open-mouthed, wide-eyed expression quickly gave way to a beaming smile that outshone the whole party.

Dom really had done a fantastic job, though.

Dozens of twinkly lights had been strung up everywhere. Tasteful gold balloons bobbed over the chairs and buffet tables, which held rows of shiny warming pans filled with all her favorite foods. Flowers and candles had been neatly placed on every surface. A mountain of presents waited for her in one corner.

She still clutched my present in her hands. I smiled a little at the memory of her rapturous expression when she opened it. No matter what happened between us, I couldn’t help the bottomless desire to make her happy.

Hence why I was also at this party when I’d rather be buried in work, trying to forget the stupid—yet true—things I’d said last night.

“Looks like you pulled off your part well,” said a deep voice behind me.

I faced Leo. “Wasn’t too hard. Dom deserves all the credit.”

He smiled warmly at Dom, who was currently being smothered with hugs and kisses by his mom. “I love that kid. He’s got the biggest heart, you know?”

I nodded, feeling a segue coming.

“So, that kiss was pretty lame.”

My eyes widened. “Excuse me?”

He smirked at me. “Last night, with my cousin. Looked like you were being forced to kiss a dead fish. And Gina is no dead fish.”

“No, she’s most certainly not. And why the hell do you all of a sudden care how well I kiss your cousin? I thought you were against this?”

He shrugged. “A little birdie told me that Gina rigged the whole thing with Cheryl. And Gina doesn’t do anything she doesn’t want to do.”

I narrowed my eyes. “A little birdie? Is your mom still going to Craft Committee meetings with Cheryl and my mom?”

“Yep,” he said with a grin.

“Well, she might’ve been on board with the whole thing, but why does that make you less worried about her heart?”

He threw his head back and laughed. “Ah, Wyatt, how much you have to learn about women. Maybe I should start a class for the men of this town, so—”

I growled and wrapped my arm around his neck. “I get on just fine—”

“Boys! No fighting!” Leo’s mom rounded the corner, scolding us.

I immediately released Leo, who sputtered and quickly combed his fingers through his long, tousled hair.

“Sorry,” we both chorused with twin grins. It was an act that always worked with Michelle, a plump woman with boundless energy and kindness.

She shook her head, eyes twinkling, and hurried off with a bottle of wine.

Carter appeared out of nowhere, in his usual flannel and work pants. “Aw, did I miss the action?” He glanced at Leo. “What’d you do, smudge his sheriff’s badge?”

Leo and Carter got a good chuckle out of that, and I couldn’t help smiling.
